Barcelona look to ward off Man Utd by renegotiating star defender's contract

Samuel Umtiti is so happy with Barcelona that he doesn’t even want to take advantage of his leverage and renegotiate his contract to raise his salary. It appears, however, that Barcelona are equally happy with him, and want to renegotiate his contract as a result.

With a salary of €3 million, and a release clause of €60 million, Umtiti secures his place as one of the great values in world soccer. Those numbers are well within reach of Europe’s top clubs. With Manchester United reportedly keen on acquiring him, Barcelona want to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Starting after the forthcoming transfer window the Catalan club will begin negotiations with his representatives. The resulting contract should yield him a higher salary, and provide Barcelona with further security of his services by way of a higher transfer clause.

His current contract ends in 2021, so expect him to be tied to the La Liga leaders for at least half a decade more.
