Coach: 'Depay flopping at Man United because he misses his mother'

A former coach of Memphis Depay's has a clear idea as to why the Dutch international is struggling so much at Manchester United.

Speaking to Manchester Evening News, Fred Rutten claims that the 22-year-old is partly struggling because he can no longer see his mother, Cora Schensema, on a regular basis.

"I think he has a very good relationship with his mother but I think that's part of it," he told the Manchester Evening News, "But he's still young and I think he can develop to be a big player - young players take time to develop”.

Rutten, 53, coached PSV from 2009 to 2012, handing Depay his professional debut in 2011, telling interviewers that he was “ready for the first team” when he was only 15-16.

"There are young players who have so much confidence, but players like Memphis show it on the pitch, in training and for the team."

Rutten also hinted that Depay could do with a loan, or potentially even a move away from Old Trafford, with Juventus, Roma, Milan and Everton interested in him.

"Sometimes, young players, they switch from clubs and then you see they come back.

"There's still big young players who leave the club and in one moment they are back again and they can develop more.

"I believe in the boy."
