Here's why Liverpool should not seek a reunion with Mascherano
Rumors about his future began in earnest when he started to see less-and-less time under Ernesto Valverde. As such, Mascherano is so well respected that the club will not stand in the way of his next move, even if it means declining a transfer fee.
Among the places he’s been linked are MLS, China, the Middle East, and, most recently, Liverpool. The English outfit boasts a dynamic offensive unit, but has struggled on defense, seemingly every week. On Tuesday they blew a 3-0 halftime lead to Sevilla, ultimately settling for a draw in Champions League.
Though Mascherano has been one of the best defenders in soccer history, he is just that, history. 33-years-old may not seem like a daunting obstacle, but consider that his decline of late has been dramatic, and there’s no reason to think he can stem it in the fast-paced Premier League.
That he’s been associated with MLS, China, and the Middle East should, itself, be a disqualifier for a return to Anfield. Yes, Liverpool need to beef up their defense. No, they shouldn’t confuse Mascherano as a savior, even if it’s only temporary. With their considerable pocketbook, they ought to focus on building for the future, and invest in a promising young star who can solidify the back now, and for years to come.
