This will be the 161st La Liga derby between Atletico and Real Madrid, the second most in the competition after the Catalonian derby between Barcelona and Espanyol (167).

Real Madrid have won more games against Atletico than any other team in La Liga history (86). The Whites also have the most away wins against them in the competition (34).

Atletico Madrid have only lost one of their last eight league derbies against Real Madrid (W4 D3) – the last they played in the competition at Vicente Calderon (0-3 in November 2016).

This will be the first derby between Atletico and Real Madrid at Wanda Metropolitano. Atletico failed to win their first league derby at both Vicente Calderon (2-2 in 1967) and at Metropolitano (0-3 in 1929).

Atletico have only won one of their last 16 games at home against Real Madrid in La Liga (D4 L11), 4-0 in February 2015. This was the biggest Atletico win against Real Madrid in the competition since 1987 (4-0 at Santiago Bernabeu).

Atletico could equal their best start without a defeat in La Liga history (W6 D5), recorded in their famous season of 1995/96 when they won the double of La Liga and Copa del Rey (unbeaten in the first 12 games). The Red-And-Whites could also set their longest unbeaten run in La Liga under Diego Simeone (16, currently W9 D6).

Real Madrid have won 13 of their last 15 La Liga away games but they lost the last one (2-1 against Girona). The Whites haven’t lost consecutive away games in the competition since March 2015 under Carlo Ancelotti.

Atletico de Madrid have conceded 83% of their goals from headers in La Liga this season (five out of six), the highest percentage of any team.

Real Madrid have only scored one headed goal this season in all competitions (Casemiro against Las Palmas). Last season, the Whites had scored 10 headers at this stage (40 at the end of the season).

Antoine Griezmann has scored three goals in his six league derbies against Real Madrid, one at Vicente Calderon and two at Santiago Bernabeu. The Frenchman is currently on his longest goalscoring drought for Atletico in all competitions (seven games in a row).

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored six goals in his last four games against Atletico in all competitions, a hat-trick in the last league game at Vicente Calderon and another in the first leg of Champions League semi-final last season.

The Portuguese striker has scored more goals against Diego Simeone’s Atletico than any other player in all competitions (17 goals in 23 games). However, Ronaldo has only scored one goal with his 48 shots in La Liga this season (13 on target).

Atletico have won four of their 11 league derbies against Real Madrid under Diego Simeone (D3 L4), as many as they had won in their previous 44 derbies before Argentinean’s arrival (D12 L28).

Zinedine Zidane has lost more games against Atletico than against any other side as Real Madrid manager in all competitions (2) but he won the first of his seven titles against them (2016 Champions League final).
