Despite being among the most credible Serie A title contenders, Napoli had a terrible start to the season as Maurizio Sarri could only rack up two points in the first three Serie A games.

Following his shocking debut in charge of the Partenopei, most of supporters hit out at Sarri, including the number one supporter of the club: not President Aurelio De Laurentiis, but the legendary Azzurri player Diego Armando Maradona.

“Sarri is a good person, but he is not worthy of Napoli. It was a big gift for him to sit on Napoli’s bench. I would have kept Benitez”, the 55-year-old revealed on the 14th of September.

Nevertheless, the manager did not take Maradona’s criticisms personally declaring that it was a honor for him that Maradona knew his name and that he hoped he would have been good enough to make Napoli’s legendary no. 10 change his mind.

Napoli are enjoying an unbeaten streak of 15 games (including Europe League). The Azzurri sit 4th in Serie A, with two points less than the table leaders Inter and Fiorentina.

As the Italian paper Il Mattino revealed, Maradona seems to have changed idea on the former Empoli boss. “I was wrong about Sarri, I apologize with him”, the 1986 World Cup winner revealed, addingt hat he considers Gonzalo Higuain his natural heir at the Stadio San Paolo.
