Spurs make contact with Fiorentina over star midfielder
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly made contact with Fiorentina over the availability of defensive midfielder Matias Vecino. The 25-year-old Uruguayan international had a great season in Tuscany last year and became a key part of the squad playing 40 times in all competitions.
Pochettino is in danger of losing his England international Eric Dier this summer who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and The Sun claims that Vecino is seen as the perfect replacement. He won’t come cheaply however, the player has a contract at the Stadio Artemio Franchi until 2021 and Fiorentina sporting director Pantaleo Corvino is in no hurry to off-load.
Vecino’s career has taken a while to take off in Italy; the player has had loan spells with both Cagliari and Empoli before gaining a regular first-team spot under ex-coach Paolo Sousa last season. A tough-tackling player, Vecino is everything you would expect from a South American hard-man.
