Tottenham pursue Barcelona youngster

Tottenham Hotspur are in the race for Barcelona youngster Carlos Alena and with Newcastle United also in the hunt for the youngster’s signature, the north-London side are trying to pull the deal in their favour by offering the player regular first team football.

Inside Futbol - via reports in Spain - are suggesting that Alena has been offered a contract extension from the La Liga giants but he has turned that offer down in favour of wanting to play more games.

The 19-year-old made just four appearances for the Catalan side and can be drawn away by a team matching his €3m release clause.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen on the midfielder and will tempt to lure him away from the Nou Camp - but he will have to battle Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez, who is currently looking for his second signing for the Toon Army, having already secured loanee winger Christian Atsu from Chelsea on a permanent deal.
