Valencia: Zaza needs surgery. Here's why it won't affect the La Liga race...for now

Valencia announced star Italian striker Zaza is set for surgery to repair a torn meniscus he’s suffered through for some time. The specter of surgery looms over the second ranked La Liga side, who has been propelled by his nine goals to a remarkable turnaround.

At the moment, the club says he can play through the injury, but they must be careful. A further aggravation of it could necessitate immediate surgery, and doom their dreams of a return to Europe, if not the La Liga title.

Zaza was forced to miss Italy’s now infamous two-legged defeat to Sweden after aggravating the meniscus injury in practice. Prior to the injury, he was pegged to start alongside Ciro Immobile as the tip of the Italian attacking spear.

“Zaza’s had a partial tear in the external meniscus of his knee for a while,” said Valencia boss Marcelino. “He’s okay for now, but at some point he’ll have to undergo surgery. It can’t be cured with rest.”
