Wenger: I like Enrique, Arsenal timed retirement announcement

Arsene Wenger has revealed that it was Arsenal who timed the announcement of his retirement.

The Frenchman was speaking ahead of tonight’s Europa League semi-final with Atletico Madrid: "After reaching agreement about my departure, I was happy for the club to decide when to announce. I wish to make it clear the timing of the announcement was right," he said.

It was hinted in some reports that he himself was taken a little aback at the timing, the Frenchman later saying that reading so many eulogies made it feel like he was watching his own funeral!

Wenger has won three Premier League titles with Arsenal, but hasn’t taken home that trophy since 2004, and the feeling was that his teams weren’t challenging anymore.

With the Frenchman potentially lined up for a directorial role at Paris Saint-Germain, Wenger also had some kind words about Luis Enrique, who is being touted as a potential replacement.

"I don't want to influence the next manager, but of course I have a high opinion of Luis Enrique."
