ANALYSIS: Fiorentina’s January transfer window was a disaster

Fiorentina’s shock 4-1 defeat at hands of Roma pointed out many critical issues for Paulo Sousa’s side, including that the La Viola’s January transfer window was a true disaster.

If Roma’s January signings Diego Perotti and Stephan El Shaarawy scored one goal each, Fiorentina’s newcomers Tino Costa disappeared on the pitch of the Stadio Olimpico, Kone warmed the bench for the whole game and Yohan Benalouane has yet to make his debut with La Viola’s shirt.

The only good news came from Christain Tello who earned a penalty kick in the first half, while former West Ham Mauro Zarate was serving a three-match ban after being sent off against Inter.

Don’t take us wrong. Nothing is lost so far, but Paulo Sousa and Fiorentina fans were right in January when asking the club to sign a strong central defender.

Facundo Roncaglia’s and Nenad Tomovic’s form has been too unpredictable this term and the club had to sign a more reliable centre-back, like Emanuel Mammana, rather than injured Yohan Benalouane who is still recovering from a back injury and will probably come back to Leicester City at the end of the campaign.
