Barcelona midfielder signs new three-year-old amid Premier League interest

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur target Carles Alena has signed a new deal with Barcelona that will see the highly-sought-after 19-year-old remain at the club for three years, according to the Catalan side’s website via Barca Blaugranes

Rafa Benitez led Newcastle back to the Premier League at the first time of asking last season, and was promised by owner Mike Ashley that he would be allowed money to spend.

There has been a bit of turbulence at the North East side recently, but following a hurried meeting with managing director Lee Charnley, that has all seemed to have calmed down.

If the speculation is true regarding Alena, Benitez will be disappointed to miss out on another target, yet with the Spaniard’s large network – particular in Spain, there are plenty other players that the Champions League winning manager can attract to ensure a successful season at Tyneside.

Spurs were in for the player too, but have a whole host of other targets. Strangely, Alena, it was suggested, wanted game-time instead of secondary status. That will all have to wait now the player has made his decision to stay with the La Liga giants.
