Callejon has Higuain's departure to thank for Spain call-up

Jose Callejon has some more good news on the horizon, beyond his scintillating start to the 2016/2017 season. His five goals and three league assists have reportedly swung Spain Coach Juan Lopetegui, who is now set to call up the former Real Madrid youngster.

This follows a two-year wait for Callejon, who will now be with the squad being assembled for the qualifiers against Italy and Albania.

The 29-year-old's history with La Furia Roja hasn’t been an easy one, often being dropped in favour of the many scintillating talents that Spain have at their disposal. Last season wasn’t easy on Calleti, either, seeing as he was asked to play second fiddle to Higuain, scoring only 7 goals in 38 games.

Now that the Argentine is gone, Callejon is only two goals short of last season’s total… and still has 30 days to equal it.
