Chelsea legend: Van Dijk shouldn't join

Graeme Le Saux has warned Virgil Van Dijk to not sign for Chelsea, making it clear that such a move would not be the most beneficial for the Dutchman’s career.

The Southampton star was very close to moving to Liverpool in summer, but every offer was rejected by the Saints, leaving the Reds with a weakened defence with which to begin the season.

Chelsea could do with reinforcements too, but have former player Le Saux arguing that Van Dijk would do better to stick to playing time.

‘If Chelsea are to carry on with playing a back three then they need top quality players in those positions but [Gary] Cahill, [David] Luiz and [Cesar] Azpilicueta are all having decent seasons so far.”

Van Dijk handed in a transfer request in the summer, but things went nowhere.

“In addition,” Le Saux continued “Christensen has done well having come through the ranks so I think Van Dijk would have quite the fight on his hands in trying to displace those players from the starting XI.

“The bigger issue for me is the need for a strong back-up option to Marcos Alonso.”
