Conte to return to Italian national team?

Former Juventus boss Antonio Conte guided the Azzurri to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, but his replacement Gian Pero Ventura has failed to impress during their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Ventura has only been able to guide Italy to the World Cup qualification play-offs so far, after they finished runners-up to Spain in Group G and now face a winner-takes-all clash to qualify for Russia 2018. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) were seriously disappointed with the manner of Italy’s 3-0 defeat to Spain and a 1-1 draw at home to Macedonia on Monday did little to appease concerns over Ventura’s future.

While some within the FIGC remain unhappy about the way Conte left, with his switch to Chelsea confirmed before Euro 2016 had begun, reports suggest other members are keen to convince the naysayers that he’s the right man to lead them forward.

Conte won the Premier League in his first season in English football but has admitted he would be keen to return to Italy. He did not extend his originally penned three-year stay when signing a new contract in the summer and it’s thought he will not stick around in England too much beyond that period of time.
