Diego Simeone’s future thrown into doubt after post UCL final interview

Diego Simeone used the word ‘fracaso’ (failure in Spanish) to describe Atletico Madrid’s defeat against Real in the Champions League final. Their second one in the last three seasons.

Asked about his plans for the future after the game, Simeone replied: “I don’t know if this is the end of my experience here. It’s a logical question after what happened, but I need to think about it.”
“Playing two Champions League finals in three years is great, but I am not happy about results.”

Of course Simeone replied to questions just a few minutes after Ronaldo’s final penalty kick, with his opponents still celebrating on the pitch. There was huge disappointment, not mention that the Lisbon’s final is still a fresh memory for both him and his players.

Simeone won one Liga, one Copa del Rey, one Spanish Super Cup, one Europa League and one European super cup with Atletico Madrid and thinking about leaving the club after everything he did for them would only be understandable.

But where could he end up should he decide to leave? All the best European clubs have a manager already apart from, maybe, PSG that would be the only top club available to offer him a job.

Simeone will coach Inter one day, but it is difficult to see him sitting on Inter’s bench from next season as Roberto Mancini has one more year left on his contract .

The last Argentinean manager to coach Inter was Hector Cuper who, oddly, joined the nerazzurri after losing two Champions League finals with Valencia. Cuper also lost the Serie A title on the final game of the 2001-02 season following an away defeat against Lazio. Diego Simeone netted the equalizer for the biancocelesti in that game.
