Ex ref Ceccarini still believes Iuliano's bodycheck on Ronaldo was not penalty

When Inter and Juve face each other, everyone still remembers what happened 18 years ago when referee Piero Ceccarini did not allow a penalty for Inter after a contact between Juventus’ defender Mark Iuliano and Inter’s striker Ronaldo.

Asked about one of the most controversial decision in the history of Italian football, Ceccarini himself told the Tirreno he still thinks that was not a penalty kick.

“Eighteen years have passed already and I still believe that contact was not punishable by a penalty kick. I’ve only spoke twice about it before, that’s the third time.”

“Gigi Simoni [Inter's boss in 1998] always talks about me and I could even press charges on him for what he’s been saying.”

“I wouldn’t give that penalty even if I were under torture.”

“Unfortunately there are some articles you can find on the internet suggesting I admitted the mistake. That’s not true.”

“Images show that it is Ronaldo who hit Iuliano, not the other way around. I was on the pitch, just a few meters away from the scene. The defender wants to stop the striker’s run, but Ronaldo moves the ball and doesn’t follow it. He hits Iuliano who is still in the middle of the area.”

“I told Pagliuca that would have been a charging foul in basketball, actually, I should have probably  given a free kick for Juventus.”
