FOCUS 'That's it?': Milan's worst transfer window in 30 years ¦ by Gianluca Minchiotti

Thirty years after taking over AC Milan, Silvio Berlusconi’s parting gift to the Rossoneri faithful is Mati Fernandez, a bench-warmer at Fiorentina.

When the magnate took over in 1986, his first signing was Roberto Donadoni, who cost Milan 10 billion of the old lira, enough to trump Giampiero Boniperti’s Juventus.

This is the contrast that Milan fans have struggled to accept over the last 7-8 years. Until Milan’s new owners pony up the €85 million they promised when they signed the preliminary contract, the Rossoneri will have to get used to the likes of Jose Sosa making appearances, and many more headlines along the lines of Tuttosport’s “Milan go out without a bang, Montella will have to make do”. It sounds far more curt in Italian, I can assure you.

“It won’t be easy for l’Aeroplanino to somehow get this team back on its feet, after what is without a doubt the worst transfer session of the Berlusconian era. Ironically, the Rossoneri are fine in certain areas, to the point where they have too many alternatives (attacking midfield, say) whilst barely having much either in central midfield or in defence, where 23-year-old rookie Gustavo Gomez was thrown to the wolves n Saturday night.

Until the takeover, until Marco Fassone takes over as director general and names a sporting director, this is what Milan have to live with. It’s pretty grim.
