    Italy earthquake, Sergio Pirozzi: the mayor-coach of Amatrice

    A night of nightmares has cancelled a summer made of dreams. Amatrice’s mayor Sergio Pirozzi was one of the first persons to speak out this morning after the terrible earthquake that hit central Italy, leaving 73 dead at least.

    “Amatrice isn’t here anymore”. Pirozzi’s cry of pain has reached every corner of the world. Tonight’s earthquake cancelled the whole town and broke the dreams of its citizens, including those of its mayor.

    Sergio Pirozzi is not only the mayor of Amatrice, he’s also a part-time coach in charge of Serie D side Trastevere and Pirozzi organized their pre-season training camp in Amatrice earlier this summer.

    Pirozzi’s Trastevere were promoted from Eccellenza (Italy’s 5th division) to Serie D in 2014-15 and managed to survive in Italy’s 4th division last term.

    This summer, they managed a 3-2 win against Serie B side Ascoli in a pre-season friendly game. Pirozzi earned Lega Pro promotion with Rieti in 2005 and has achieved seven more promotions throughout his non-professional managerial career.

    He has also coached Sorianese and Ostiense, which is De Rossi’s childhood club.Today, out thoughts go out to coach Pirozzi and his fellow citizens.
