Italy’s far right leader Matteo Salvini arrested in Russia after showing AC Milan shirt

Italy’s far right leader Matteo Salvini was arrested in Moscow’s Red square yesterday after showing a t-shirt of AC Milan and a banner asking to vote against the government in Italy’s imminent constitutional referendum.

Salvini was arrested by Russian police and released shortly after thanks to the mediation of Bruno Giancotti an Italian entrepreneur who is living in Russia and had a meeting with Salvini before he showed the t-shirt and the banner.

Showing political banners without approval is a crime under the Russian law and that’s why Salvini was questioned by police before being released.

Salvini is a well known AC Milan fan and could have been accused of showing political banners without approval, whilst wearing the shirt of AC Milan only might not have caused Salvini troubles.

Salvini’s political party Lega Nord had been a long-time ally of Berlusconi’s Forza Italia even if the two political parties are not in the same coalition at the moment.
