Juventus urged to extend Barzagli deal

Juventus’ midfielders were close to perfection against Napoli as their work helped the Old Lady on both the defensive and attacking phase. Simone Zaza did the rest against the Partenopei. The Bianconeri have won each of the last 15 league games, conceding only one goal in the last ten (when Cassano found the net of the goal at the Ferraris during Samp v Juve).

Juventus are the table leaders for the first time this season and most of the credit has to be given to their full-backs. As also Massimiliano Allegri pointed out yesterday, the recovered balance between attack and defense was a key factor in helping Juventus to get back on track after a shock start to the season.

With Giorgio Chiellini who was out of action due to injury and Leonardo Bonucci who also had to be replaced  in the second half against Napoli, Andrea Barzagli stepped up as the true leader of Juventus’ defensive line.

Barzagli, 35, nullified the Serie A top scorer Gonzalo Higuain and was probably the man of the match on Saturday evening. The Italy International’s contract deal at the end of the season and Juventus need to extend his contract as soon as possible, if they don’t want to lose him as a free agent at the end of the season.

Daniele Rugani is young and promising, but Barzagli is probably irreplaceable in this moment. Is he the best Italian full-back at the moment?
