‘Lewandowski and Modric almost joined Napoli’

Former Napoli Director of Football Pierpaolo Marino attended the ‘La Marsa International Football Transfer Meeting’ and revealed a couple of interesting facts about his past at the San Paolo.

“I spotted so many talented footballers during my career”, Marino said.

“From [Fabrizio]Ravanelli to [Oliver] Bierhoff, from [Ezequiel] Lavezzi to [Marek] Hamsik. The latter has become the best goal scorer in the history of Napoli.”

“I came close to signing Diego Milito but the deal collapsed due to a waiter. I was talking about the details of the operation during a lunch meeting and this guy heard what I said, he informed one of his relatives who works as a journalist and the day after the story was on the papers so Genoa speeded up and signed him instead.”

“[Robert]Lewandowski and [Luka] Modric also came close to joining Napoli but I couldn’t sign them because of Serie B regulations on non-EU players.”
