Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City & Arsenal told to dig deep for Dutch defender

Another name familiar to all who follow the transfer window closely is that of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk. The 25-year-old Dutchman has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs this summer with Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal leading the way in the fight for his signature.

Having signed a new six-year deal last summer, Saints chairman Ralph Kruger is in no hurry to off-load his star defender and after previous reports suggested that he would only let his player go for offers in the region of £50M, comes news from the Daily Mirror that the asking price has now risen to a whopping £70M.

The journal suggests that City boss Pep Guardiola has offered van Dijk £180,000-a-week to head to the Etihad Stadium whereas Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is ready to raise that to £200,000-a-week. The player himself is believed to have told the south-coast club that he wants to leave despite being given the captaincy last season.

Kruger recently stated that; “We do not need to sell any players. Whether the ownership changes or not, it is not going to change our strategic position. We have the backing of Katharina and/or any potential change which we as a management team feel extremely comfortable with.”

“We have a strategy which is being fine-tuned, but the base is in place. We are pre-positioned for the transfer window and we do not have to sell any player. That will be our decision and whether it is in the best interests of the club or not.”
