Liverpool set their sights on Algerian international defender

Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Liverpool have identified Napoli full-back Faouzi Ghoulam as one of their primary summer targets. The 26-year-old has become the main focus of attention from boss Jurgen Klopp after a move to bring Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon to Anfield was aborted.

Ghoulam has been in Serie A for two season’s now and Napoli are desperate to tie him down to a new deal at the San Paolo however, contract talks have stalled as interest from elsewhere looks to have turned the player’s head. Klopp is looking to transform his squad this summer into a team ready to battle on all fronts both at home and abroad and with Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk on the verge of a move to Anfield, Ghoulam’s signature would send out a statement of intent.

Competition for the Algerian will be fierce; Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has already made enquiries and with Liverpool still not guaranteed entry into the group stages of next season’s Champions League, the German knows he will have to put on a charm offensive to convince the player to choose Anfield over Stamford Bridge.

Di Marzio also writes that Ghoulam’s representatives are expecting contact to be made by Liverpool in the coming days.
