Liverpool set to miss out on another Dutch international defender

Italian daily Leggo (via Calciomercato.com) claims that Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij is close to signing a new deal at Lazio. The 25-year-old has been linked with a number of top European sides after earlier reports suggested he would not be renewing his contract in the Italian capital.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, having already missed out on de Vrijs’ international team-mate Virgil van Dijk, was looking to bring the player to Anfield but latest reports suggest that he will now commit his future to his current employer after reconsidering their offer. That offer is believed to have a €30M release clause inserted into it and the two parties are understood to be ready to meet next week to try to finalise the agreement.

De Vrij arrived at the Stadio Olimpico back in 2014 but injury has curtailed his career in Serie A. Last season however, the Dutchman returned to full fitness and returned to form as the club reached the Coppa Italia Final and qualified for the Europa League.
