Man Utd get transfer boost as Napoli president talks about future of star striker

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis talked to assembled media in Florence on Saturday evening. Here’s what he had to say on his star striker Dries Mertens who is being linked with a move to Manchester United and Arsenal.

The 30-year-old signed a contract extension with Napoli a few months ago but he has a € 28 million release clause included in his contract that any top European club can easily meet.

“Mertens is among the candidates for the Ballon d’Or. We didn’t want to sell him in the summer and we extended his contract. That was our biggest signing of the summer.”
Mertens, however, did not have a release clause last summer and De Laurentiis didn’t confirm the Belgium International will be offered a new one.

“I’ve worked on his contract extension for one year because I wanted him to stay, now he has to enjoy the moment,” De Laurentiis said.

“The signings of Ounas and Mario Rui have strengthen our squad, let’s see what will happen with Milik. On the 31st of August I had the feeling something could have happened and I signed Inglese from Chievo.”

Inglese, 28, is now out on loan at Chievo but De Laurentiis revealed that he will ‘knock their door’ in the January window.
