Marseille want Arsenal, Atletico Madrid strikers, French internationals to reinforce attack

It looks like Olympique Marseille are set to recruit heavily in the summer, and are looking at Arsenal and Atletico Madrid for their next buys.

Goal can reveal (via Le10Sport) that Kevin Gameiro and Olivier Giroud are the most important names on the Ligue 1 hopefuls’ list.

Bought out by a mogul in Frank McCourt, the French giants want to get back to their old glory days, and signing Dimitri Payet from West Ham sounds like it was just the beginning.

Why? The recent injury to Bafetimbi Gomis is a bad one, keeping him out for 4-6 weeks, and forcing the Phoceens to face Rennes at home this weekend without a true, out-and-out striker.

Recently asked about why Marseille hadn’t signed anyone in the winter, Coach Rudi Garcia argued that the club “had evaluated plenty of strikers, there were some who were very expensive, and we couldn’t afford to spend 30 million on each recruit”.

Giroud has struggled to impose himself this season, starting only six Premier League games, but managing eight total goals in a further eleven appearances as a substitute.

Gameiro has played a whole lot more, scoring nine goals in La Liga. A former PSG man, Gameiro managed 19 Ligue 1 goals before being sold to Sevilla, where he was an instant success.
