AC Milan: Champions League clause in Montella's contract revealed

AC Milan manager Vincenzo Montella has been under intense public pressure to preform with his reworked roster. After spending €175 million this summer, expectations are at their highest in the last 10 years. However, it has been revealed that the former striker-turned-manager is under even more pressure privately.

According to Corriere della Sera, Montella’s contract includes a clause that releases him if the Rossoneri fail to qualify for the Champions League this season. Additionally, such an eventuality would pay him a €1.8 million “golden parachute” as they would part ways.

The article goes on to say that Milan executives have faith in Montella, even after their struggles early this season. In particular, they appreciated how he handled recent adversity, and decided to sack their conditioning coach.

Despite the availability of Carlo Ancelotti, it appears Montella will remain at the San Siro for the remainder of this campaign, barring a calamitous turn of events. It’s unclear whether the current decision to retain Montella is related to reports of owner Yonghong Li seeking additional investors.
