Montella: ‘Cassano needs to get fit’
Having been brought in during the summer to reinforce Sampdoria’s attack, the former Roma and Real Madrid star has barely figured this season, playing only nine games and starting just twice since joining at the end of the transfer window.
Expected to play behind or alongside Eder and Luis Muriel, the 32-year-old has simply been overshadowed by them.
And now he’s come in for some veiled criticism from new Coach Vincenzo Montella.
With the departure of Walter Zenga, who didn’t want him at the club and had the Apulian player forced on him by president Massimo Ferrero, Cassano was hoping that he would be able to impress former-team mate Montella.
If he was expecting any favours however, he’s in for a rude surprise, with Montella chipping away at Cassano for not being in shape. “Over the last four months all his team-mates have improved their physical condition, now it’s time for Antonio to do so too”.
Cassano terminated his contract with Parma by mutual consent in January, with the Emilian club in dire financial straits, and has yet to regain match fitness.
