Newcastle star Wijnaldum linked with Newcastle exit amid Roma interest

The agent of Newcastle midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has added to speculation the Dutchman will leave St James Park this summer.

Roma are believed to be the main team interested in securing Wijnaldum, and his agent described them as a ‘great club’, while Newcastle have tempted manager Rafa Benitez into helping them get out of the second tier.

Since joining from PSV Eindhoven last July on a five-year deal, the Rotterdam-born midfielder has notched 11 Premier League goals and five assists, despite Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship.

A Feyenoord youth product, he made his professional debut in 2007 as the youngest player ever to represent the club.

“Wijnaldum’s situation right now is very simple,” the midfielder’s agent, Humphrey Nijman, told RomaNews.

“Newcastle have been relegated to the second division, so now the player has to think about his future.

“At the moment I can’t say any more, and I can’t talk about negotiations. Roma are a great club, one of the best in Europe.

“How much would he cost? I can’t answer that, it’s the club that decides a player’s price.

“I only take care of Wijnaldum’s contract.”

Wijnaldum himself admitted back in October that English football is exciting.

“Everybody can beat each other in the Premier League. Anything is to be expected in that league, which you see on the results.

“You play against world class players, but also the lesser teams are good – it is a strong competition.”
