OP-ED: Were Inter wrong to sign Eder?

In his pre-Derby press conference, Milan manager Sinisa Mihajlovic couldn't help but take another potshot at former team-mate and boss Roberto Mancini, defining the signing of Sampdoria striker Eder as the last sticker in Inter's Panini album.

Roberto Mancini had strongly pursued Eder, nearly grabbing him last summer before landing the decisive blow in winter, using the money from the Fredy Guarin deal. Trouble is, four games in, the former Sampdoria man has hardly had much of an impact. The Italian international reached his lowest ebb in last night's defeat to Fiorentina, being taken off with 20 minutes to go after an ineffective performance. What on earth has happened?

Well, it is one thing to rove around in attack for Sampdoria, another to be isolated on the wing in the 4-3-3, which Eder, in all fairness, had dropped some hints about before his move to the Nerazzurri. From scoring 12 goals in 21 games with the Blucerchiati to wasting a lot of energy and fluffing easy headers against Milan... it's been a rough one for the Brazilian, who hasn't exactly been getting good service from the Nerazzurri midfield, either.

Should Inter have brought someone else? It's frankly difficult to escape this conclusion at this stage, despite the good price the Nerazzurri got for Eder (€11.5 million). In an attack rich in alternatives, was it really necessary to splash out for another striker, especially when the midfield has always struggled to create chances consistently?

Admittedly, Lucas Biglia is oft-injured and very expensive, but the €13 million the Beneamata made from the Guarin transaction should have been reinvested patiently and wisely, and not as a gut reaction to the season taking a turn for the worse. If Banega really wasn't available at all, then why not focus on Eder's team-mate at Sampdoria, Roberto Soriano? Didn't Inter pretty much book him for the summer? Why not bring him in immediately.
