Real Madrid star: why I turned down Man United

Raphael Varane has explained why he didn’t join Manchester United.

The young French international had the opportunity to move to the Old Trafford last season, because Jose Mourinho wanted him there.

The Special One has been linked to the 24-year-old - with whom he worked at the Bernabeu - again recently as Real pursue David De Gea.

The Portuguese Coach was partly behind Real’s decision to recruit Varane for 10 million from Lens back in 2011.

Nevertheless, it looks like Varane preferred to stay at Real, though he first had to ask the club if they believed in him or not.

“I preferred to talk with my [Real Madrid’s] directors and the Coach to find out if they trusted me,” he told L’Equipe.

“Because that was the case, I put my head down and got to work.”

With the Galacticos offering €70 million for De Gea of late, Mourinho has thrown in the names of Varane and Alvaro Morata as part of a possible swap, but has been given a frosty reception so far.
