Roma the queen of penalty kicks in Europe: five in six games

Italian teams failed to shine in the last three days of European football. The only Serie A sides to snatch victories were Napoli and Sassuolo. Juventus, Fiorentina and AS Roma drew their games, Inter shamefully lost against Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

Talking about AS Roma, their performance was definitely poorer than Juventus’ and Fiorentina’s, the two other sides that snatched a draw in their opening European clashes.

Luciano Spalletti’s side showed lack of hanger as well as sterile ball possession with just a few clear-cut chances created. The Italian boss hit out at the team after the Viktoria Plzen game: “I saw a mental laziness that I did not like at all. We have to do more and have more personality. Sometimes we lacked of bravery, especially in the middle of the pitch.”

AS Roma have been failing to shine despite having been already awarded five penalty kicks in the first six official games, no other club in Europe has more than them so far. In Serie A only, they’ve had four penalties, just as much as all other Serie A sides combined.

We are not here to discuss whether penalties were rightly awarded or not, but it is worth noticing that without penalty kicks, AS Roma would have just five points in Serie A, with three loss in all competitions so far. That’s one more reason why Spalletti is everything but happy and relaxed at the moment.
