SCOUTING REPORT: Zé Gomes, the next Benfica star

Benfica wonderkid Zé Gomes is one of the most promising players that the European U-17 Championship can offer. The 17-year-old hit-man netted six goals in four games (one every 36 minutes) scoring against Azerbaijan (twice), Scotland and Austria (hat-trick).

The Guinea-Bissau-born striker with Portuguese passport was even in danger to not start his career as a footballer as his father did not want him to take part to a tournament held in Algarve in 2011. Zé Gomes respected his mum’s desire to see him playing in the tournament and scouts of Sporting clube de Portugal and Benfica noticed his qualities for the first time ever.

The payer decided to move to Benfica the following year, netting 35 goals in his first campaign with the Eagles’ youth team. He has also scored 7 goals in Youth League games this term, proving Benfica’s sporting director Rui Costa to be ready for a senior team promotion.
