Spalletti: 'Vermaelen has a sports hernia, Jesus will be benched against Torino'

Luciano Spalletti does good press conferences. Quizzed about Roma’s early Sunday kickoff against Torino, the Tuscan was full of praise for loanee Leandro Castan (“It’s a great pleasure to see him on the pitch”), his opponents and their Coach, Sinisa Mihajlovic.

“When we talk about Torino I feel a particular respect stir up in me, those who love this sport remember what the Grande Torino did”.

“It’ll be a difficult game, Sinisa [Mihajlovic] is the coach of Torino and he fits the bill, he’s got great character, he’s shown it both as a player and as a coach, we’ll have to fight hard in this one.”

There was some bad news however, with the former Sampdoria and Zenit Coach confirming that Thomas Vermaelen has a sports hernia. “The situation is the same as it’s been for weeks. Vermaelen is out, he has a sports hernia.

“That said there are many types of hernia, some which can heal in 15 days, others which need more time. A lot of things have written, for now it’s a sports hernia”.

Talk turned to the team selection, where we found out that Juan Jesus will be benched./

“I trust Juan Jesus but Fazio and Manolas will play in the middle”.

The Coach finally made a joke about Francesco Totti’s upcoming birthday party...

“He invited me to his party and I think I’ll go and say hi, wish him Happy Birthday and leave… when they see me come in I won’t be welcome (laughs).
