Benfica to challenge Spurs for highly-rated German defender

Spurs are close to sealing deal for German defender Jeremy Toljan. The 22-year-old Hoffenheim star has been tracked by the Premier League side for a while now, and according to Portuguese journal Record, are now in pole-position to complete the signing.

The versatile full-back can play on either flank and after Spurs recently off-loaded Kyle Walker to Manchester City, boss Mauricio Pochettino has identified Toljan as the perfect replacement. The reports also states that Benfica are monitoring the situation and could be about to make a move themselves for the player who is highly regarded in Bundesliga circles.

Reports began to emerge on Monday that the North London club had identified Toljan as one of their main summer targets and Pochettino is now understood to be ready to make the German and England international Kieren Trippier the clubs long-term full-backs.

Another name that has been linked with a move to last season’s Premier League runners-up is Dinamo Zagreb star Filip Benkovic. The 20-year-old is regarded as one of Croatia’s hottest properties.
