Spurs defender jokes: I'm only leaving if Vertonghen comes with me

Toby Alderweireldn has reassured Tottenham fans about a potential departure.

There was plenty of talk this summer about the Belgian international leaving, but he revealed in a press conference that he wasn’t interested in leaving.

The 28-year-old is liked by a number of clubs, with Chelsea and Man City particularly interested.

Speaking of his relationship with Jan Vertonghen, Alderweireld revealed that “It’s difficult for me to play without Jan. In addition, he still has a good year ahead of him in the Devils [Belgium], and as time goes by we have become true friends.”

“If I move to another club, he will have to follow me.”

This is a major improvement over his agent’s comments towards the end of the summer, when he said that the Belgian “either deserves an appropriate contract, or else he should be given a transfer.”

“Seven or eight big European clubs are interested in signing him. There are not many central defenders around who can play like he can. But these clubs will have to negotiate with Tottenham’s chairman, Daniel Levy.”
