Why AC Milan are not going to spend big this summer despite club’s takeover

Berlusconi’s holding company Fininvest confirmed yesterday that they have agreed the price for the sale of the 100% stake in AC Milan, which means the rossoneri are going to change their ownership after 30 years of Berlusconi presidency.

The Italian entrepreneur, however, is going to remain in charge as honorary president, whilst Marco Fassone is going to be appointed as CEO and GM after the closing by the end of the year ending the reign of Galliani at the club.

Fininvest also revealed that AC Milan have cashed in € 15 million and will receive further € 85 million in 35 days time, when the transfer window will be closed. This money, however, is not going to be received by AC Milan, but by Fininvest instead.

So, how AC Milan’s summer transfers strategies will evolve this summer after the club’s takeover?

First of all, the club’s sale has not enhanced the club’s finances yet, in other words Adriano Galliani is still with no money available to sign players on a permanent deal in the current transfer window.

AC Milan still need to sell their best players (Bacca or De Sciglio) if they are to sign new recruits. Bacca’s West Ham talks have been put on hold, the rossoneri want € 30 million for the Colombian ace who wants to play Champions League football next season, whilst they have slapped € 25 million price-tag on De Sciglio who could move to Juventus if Lichtsteiner departs.

Yesterday’s agreement, however, means AC Milan will have money available to invest in the future, so Adriano Galliani can work on loan deals adding options to buy or a compulsory buy-out clauses, the same formulas that he wants  to use to sign Chelsea’s Cuadrado or Real Madrid’s Isco and Kovacic.

AC Milan fans can’t expect to see the new owners spending big straight away because they are still not in charge of the club as the official closing is expected by the end of the year, which is when AC Milan will have money available to make new signings.

The January transfer window, in turn, will be a very interesting one indeed for all the diavoli fans out there, but before that date, their club still need to sell Bacca or De Scilgio to sign one or two players on a permanent deal.

If they are not going to leave the club, AC Milan can only sign players on loan deal with a future option to buy.
