WOW! Roma came very close to re-signing Benatia... what happened?
It appears that Juventus are now in pole position to sign Mehdi Benatia- but they haven't always been.
Il Messaggero claim that AS Roma were actually the closest to signing the Moroccan international- as they were resigned to losing Antonio Rudiger to Chelsea.
Walter Sabatini had agreed to Coach Luciano Spalletti's requests and had even agreed to Benatia's return to Roma, both with the defender himself and Bayern! Benatia had accepted a lower salary (€3 million a year), Bayern a loan with compulsory buyback of €18m).
What happened? Rudiger's ACL tear, that's what. The Messaggero claim that neither Benatia or his agent had heard anything since late May, and that Inter Milan have since sent feelers.
