Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker says that forward Alexis Sanchez will ‘definitely’ stay at the Gunners, amid rumours linking to Chilean international with a move away from the Emirates, with clubs Bayern Munich and Manchester City reported to be the keenest on obtaining the players’ services.

Speaking to FoxSports via FourFourTwo, the 32-year-old German centre-back was quizzed on whether he feels the forward would stay at the Gunners instead of opting to leave this summer window. Mertesacker replied:“Yes, definitely.

“We have a strong squad and we do not want to lose any players.

“Even in their final contract year we need them. We cannot afford to lose them. If you're talking about championships, to keep our best player is key."

Sanchez was a key player for Arsenal last season, netting 30 times in all competitions, in a campaign where they won the F.A Cup but missed out on a Champions League spot, finishing in fifth place in the Premier League.
