BREAKING Palermo Coach Ballardini resigns over lack of signings

This is shocking news. Well, not shocking at all when you consider that Palermo are involved. Coach Davide Ballardini has, according to Sky Sport, decided to resign, and is discussing the termination of his contract with president Maurizio Zamparini.

Palermo have already identified former Foggia man Roberto De Zerbi as a potential replacement, with ex-Atalanta man Edy Reja also in the list.

What are the reasons behind this? Well, Zamparini has been locked in a duel with his Coach all summer about which players to buy, with Ballardini far from satisfied by the choice to bring in many young players instead of more tested Serie A commodities, a wiser choice with the departure of Alberto Gilardino, Franco Vazquez and Stefano Sorrentino.

Alessandro Diamanti’s late signing wasn’t help, but the failure to land a striker (like Mario Balotelli) only made things worse, as did Zamparini’s inability to ever say something nice about anybody.

His recent Corriere dello Sport interview is more science fiction than it is analysis, but he still found plenty of time to heap pressure upon Ballardini.

“The relegation battle is a lottery? We’re strong than at least ten Serie A teams [Palermo are the fourth-fifth worst in Serie A according to most bookies. Ed.], we have 16 internationally capped players in the squad. With all due respect for Ballardini, I had contacted Sinisa Mihajlovic and he would have come, but he already had an agreement with Torino.

“Mihajlovic can give personality and grit to his teams, and he’s better at that than Giampiero Ventura himself.

“Palermo are currently missing these qualities. Ballardini will need to build a team that has a lot of temperament”.
