Eric Cantona recommended Zidane to Manchester United, but...

Zinedine Zidane could have joined Manchester United as a player, according to a former chairman.

Speaking to MUTV today, Martin Edwards claimed that Ferguson had the chance to beat Juventus to Zidane when the latter was still at Bordeaux.

And the World Champion and two-time Champions League winner as Real Madrid Coach came warmly recommended by none another than Eric Cantona!

“When Zidane was at Bordeaux, Les Kershaw, the chief scout, was telling me we should be interested in him and I mentioned it to Alex,” Martin Edwards said to MUTV.

“Alex said that Eric [Cantona] had also mentioned Zidane to him but Alex felt Zidane played in the same position as Eric.”

Ironically, the fact that Cantona recommended Zidane didn’t help things much, because Le King was believed to be too similar to Zizou to warrant recruiting him.

“Having gone over to France to persuade Eric to re-sign for us, after the Crystal Palace incident [when Cantona was banned for kicking a fan], he felt that, if he had brought Zidane in, it may have affected Eric's position, so he stuck with Eric.”
