Former FIGC president makes dumb comments about Calciopoli

Former Italian FA President Franco Carraro has made some rather questionable statements about Calciopoli, claiming that the match-fixing scandal was a “bluff”.

These comments really don’t ring true, seeing as beyond relegating Juventus and penalizing Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina, the scandal also saw Carraro himself be sentenced as part of the fix to four years and six months for his involvement, later reduced to a hefty 80.000 fine.

Carraro told the Corriere della Sera that Luciano Moggi, who was banned for life, did not “illicitly” win a title with Juventus.

“Did he really influence them? He never succeeded in illicitly winning a title with Juventus.”

Carraro claims, however, that Inter were potentially deprived of a title in 1997-1998, when Ronaldo was likely fouled inside the Juventus penalty area, only for the referee to ignore it. The Bianconeri later beat Inter to the finish line.

“The only game that I had any doubts over was Juve-Inter, with that penalty not given to Ronaldo in 1998.”
