Höwedes’ season finally set to begin in earnest

Benedikt Höwedes’ season at Juventus is yet to get fully underway, it is fair to say. Almost three months have passed since his arrival from Bundesliga club Schalke 04, when he was brought in to restore calmness and stability to a defence reeling from the sale of Leonardo Bonucci to AC Milan.

The German finally appears to be closing in on a return to first team action, after what has seemed like a never-ending wait for him to kick start his career in Bianconeri colours. Only time will tell whether he can bring that extra security to their rearguard.

Given his injury record since arriving in Turin, it seems unlikely that Juve would consider signing him on a permanent deal until he proves his fitness as the season progresses. This should give him even greater motivation to earn a place in Massimiliano Allegri’s plans for the coming seasons, not only the one he has already missed a fairly large chunk of.
