    MILAN-JUVE Classics - 28.05.2003

OK; so it wasn't a classic I hear you say. That's right but in terms of the occasion, the 2003 Champions League Final between these two old foes was probably their most important meeting ever.

The 120 minutes that preceded the penalty shoot-out was largely forgettable; except for an Andrei Shevchenko goal that was controversially ruled out by the match official Markus Merk, who deemed that Rui Costa had blocked the eye line of Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, a header from Antonio Conte which rattled the post and an Andrea Pirlo effort which hit the bar.

So to the dreaded penalties which were a nerve wracking affair; Trezeguet, Zalayeta and Montero all missed for the bianconeri, Seedorf and Kaladze for the rossoneri. The match came down to Shevchenko’s penalty and the Ukranian superstar kept his nerve to give Milan their sixth European crown.

JUVENTUS (4-4-2): Buffon; Thuram,Ferrara, Tudor, Montero; Camoranesi,Tacchinardi,Davids, Zambrotta; Trezeguet, Del Piero; Coach: Lippi
MILAN (4-4-2): Dida; Costacurta, Nesta, Kaladze, Maldini; Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf, Rui Costa; Shevchenko, Inzaghi; Coach: Ancelotti
