Former Genk midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic joined Lazio last summer for € 9 million, but Fiorentina were closing in on the 20-year-old before he joined Stefano Pioli’s side.

You might remember that the player landed in Florence shortly after having won the U-20 World Cup with Serbia national team.

Everyone believed that his move to Fiorentina was a done deal, as Milinkovic-Savic entered Fiorentina headquarters in July, ready to finalize the deal.

Trouble is that before he could sign with La Viola, he allegedly broke into tears saying: ‘Sorry, but I can’t, I don’t feel like [I wanto ti sign with Fiorentina].’

The deal collapsed and a furious Viola sporting director Daniele Pradé revealed journalists that he wouldn’t have implored anyone to join the Franchi, especially a 20-year-old player who has still everything to prove.

The saga ended with the player and his agent who travelled to Rome the following day to put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Lazio.

Football is strange, you know. Actually, football is so strange that Milinkovic-Savic scored his first Serie A goal against Fiorentina at the Franchi yesterday.

The player has struggled to adapt to life in Serie A as he only netted one goal in Europa League before yesterday’s game, but the winner plundered against his almost-former club might be the beginning of a new era at the Olimpico.

“The moment I scored was just amazing and I will never forget it”, Milinkovic-Savic revealed after the final whistle.

“I wanted to join Lazio and this goal is a reward for all the sacrifices I’ve made since I came here. I am feeling important here and I can be a decisive player, we need to stretch our unbeaten run against Bologna next week.”

In the meanwhile, it seems that some Fiorentina supporters have not enjoyed yesterday’s home defeat to Lazio at all as some of them protested against Diego Della Valle ownership.

A few fans hit out at the Italian entrepreneur at the end of the game asking him to spend more money on players, if he really wants to put an end to the club’s lack of silverware.

“We are very sad about what happened at the end of the game. Andrea Della Valle doesn’t deserve it”, Daniele Pradé told journalists.

“We always try do to the right things during transfer campaigns. He’s embittered because he is giving everything for this club and these fans.”

“We will buy a central defender and everyone knows that Benfica’s Lisandro Lopez tops our wish-list. Everything was planned already, but it is not our fault is Luisao got injured.”
