Real Madrid: Zidane backs under-fire striker amidst Kane rumours

Zinedine Zidane has shot down recent criticism of striker Karim Benzema.

Speaking ahead of Real Madrid’ game against Eibar today, the two-time Champions League winner defended his striker, who was profligate in midweek against Tottenham, prompting Gary Lineker to criticise the 29-year-old.

Already isolated from the French national team, Benzema isn’t going to win any popularity competitions, but some feel that Real are light in attack ever since Alvaro Morata left, with Benzema’s recent injury being an issue, too.

Zidane was steadfast in his defence, however:

“Lineker’s criticism of Benzema? It bothers me because for people who know football, to say that is a disgrace. For me, he’s the world’s best.

“I don’t know if people think that a No 9 has to score 50 goals. Karim won’t score 60 goals, but he’ll score 25 or 30 and assist 30.

“It bothers me, but you can’t help it and I can assure you that, for me, he’s the best [No 9] by far.”

Benzema has scored 182 goals since joining the Chamartin side in 2009 from Lyon.
