Why Real Madrid could not extend Pepe’s expiring contract

According to today’s edition of AS, Real Madrid could decide not extend Pepe’s contract which expires at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old centre-back has played a vital role in Real Madrid’s successful European campaigns over the last couple of seasons and even won EURO 2016 with Portugal national team last summer.

The Merengues, however, could decide not to extend his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu for two reasons: the first one is the final consecration of Raphale Varane who is imposing himself as one of the best defenders of La Liga this term.

The second one is the possible return of Diego Llorente from his loan spell at Malaga. Real Madrid have been handed a two-window transfer ban but, of course, can get their players back from loans.

Pepe’s Real Madrid contract runs until June 2017 and if Real Madrid fail to find agreement before January, the Portugal International can sign with any other club and move away from Real Madrid for free in June 2017.
