£50m Arsenal target will be dropped if he doesn't show commitment

Leicester City will drop Riyad Mahrez if he isn’t committed to the club.

Coach Craig Shakespeare said as much today, in response to speculation that the Arsenal target would try to force a move away from the King Power Stadium.

Mahrez has been linked with a move away, though the Gunners believe that the £50 million that the Foxes are asking for is too much.

‘With him coming out, we know where it stands but ultimately he's contracted to the football club,’ Shakespeare said. ‘We have to be professional with him but more importantly he has to be committed and I think he has to show supporters, staff and players that.”

The scorer of ten goals in all competitions and provider of five assists, Mahrez has not quite lived up to expectations after playing a blinder in 2015-2016, helping Leicester capture a completely unexpected title.

‘If he's selected he has to perform and if he doesn't show commitment he won't play,” Shakespeare continued.

“He's got a contract with us so he has to understand that.

'We haven't had any bids and if we don't have one, we've got no decision to make. I'm open-minded. It can be disappointing when players go public with it but sometimes in the modern game outside influences are behind that.

‘I will have a one-to-one. When I sit down with him I'll get an idea of where he's at. I know what Riyad is about, I know he’s ambitious and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with any player having ambition.”
