AC Milan: Montella sees backdoor to Champions League

Speaking to the press prior to AC Milan’s Europa League clash with Austria Vienna, embattled manager Vincenzo Montella conveyed the importance of the tournament to the club’s ambitions.

When asked about his plans for the match, Montella responded, “We have to play it safe so we can think of the championship.” Winning Europa League this year would mean an automatic place in next year’s Champions League – a long stated goal for the franchise.

“Because the journey is very long, we can not base all our hopes on one match,” he continued. “First we qualify against Austria Vienna, then we will think about the championship.” AC Milan can guarantee themselves a place in the next round with a victory over Austria Vienna.

He shied away from commenting on widespread reports of instability in AC Milan’s executive offices, saying only, “We are targeted, but we have to think only of the field. Now we are no longer involved, we talk about it so long.”
