Agent: 'Ajax star won't join Barca this season'

Matthijs de Ligt won’t be moving to Barcelona this season, according to his agent.

“We mean to remain at Ajax at least until next summer,” former player Barry Hulshoff told Ziggo Sport. This denies any reports that had the Catalans signing him in the short term, something the Blaugrana are rumored to be doing.

De Ligt himself had claimed that he “preferred to be a starter at Ajax rather than on Barcelona’s bench,” an indication that he wants to keep growing.

The 18-year-old has played eleven Eredivisie games this season, impressing for the Lancers and attracting interest from all over the continent.

This may come from Jasper Cillessen’s inability to establish himself at Barcelona, and he isn’t the only player to end up at the Camp Nou only to barely play.

Lucas Digne, Andre Gomes and Denis Suarez have similarly struggled to impose themselves despite joining them recently for big sums.
